Dr. James Swenson has joined Gastrointestinal Associates, one of the Southeast’s leading GI practices, as its GI Hospitalist. Hospitalists are physicians who specialize in treating patients in the hospital setting, either as inpatients or outpatients. GIA is unique in the Southeast among gastroenterology practices for providing this service for its patients.
Dr. Swenson hails from Rockville, Md., and he earned his bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the University of Maryland before completing medical school at the St. Louis University School of Medicine.
He served in the U.S. Navy from 1984 to 1995, completing his internship at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth and his residency at the naval hospitals in Bethesda and Pensacola. Dr. Swenson also completed a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Bethesda and served as General Medical Officer for Destroyer Squadron 35 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
During his military service, he earned a Naval Achievement Award, a National Defense Service Medal and a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.
Dr. Swenson opened a private medical practice in Ocean Springs, Md., before relocating to Greeneville, Tenn., where he practiced at Laughlin Memorial Hospital from 1995 to 2013. He joined Gastrointestinal Associates in September 2013.
In his free time, Dr. Swenson enjoys playing classical piano, cabinetmaking, landscaping and charcoal/pencil drawing. He lives in Greeneville with his wife Stacy, and the couple has six children.
