The specialist physicians at Gastrointestinal Associates who perform patient colonoscopies have consistently surpassed an important national quality benchmark for that procedure. The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy set a benchmark of 95 for the percentage of colonoscopies in which the entirety of the colon was examined.
For the past 19 months, the GIA physicians have consistently hit 99 or 100 percent for complete, or entire, colon examinations. There are several factors that prevent a physician from visualizing the full length of the colon, including prior surgeries to remove portions of the colon, anatomical anomalies and incomplete patient test preparation.
“That GIA’s physicians and staff members work together to consistently surpass the ASGE benchmark is an indication of their commitment to delivering the highest quality care to GIA patients,” said managing partner Dr. Bergein “Gene” Overholt.
